Evaluation Question 4

Q3 Evaluation – How effective is the combination of your main ancillary texts?
To begin I will talk of how the poster and trailer work in conjunction with each other.
Over all there aren’t a great deal of similarities – in fact they contrast each other.
The majority of the trailer is set in an open space in the ‘spooky’ countryside – it does however shift to the more dark confines of an old house, this is what is shown on the poster.
It heightens the solitary confinement that the girl faces as opposed to the light open country side.
The font throughout the poster and trailer is the same – different colours as the white works better than the red in this instance. The different coloured texts were believed to be effective by my target audience – as explored in my audience feedback.
The idea that she is coming for the audience which is in the trailer is seen also in the poster with the hand clawing at the window.
For the marketing of my film I would show the trailer on some T.V Spots to rouse attention – ‘Empire’ would then release their magazine cover, and then I would place the poster on bus stops and outside the cinema. The trailer would be shown well before release date as it doesn’t exactly give the name of the film in it so people would be on the look out for it – maybe look it up on the internet. My target audience felt that the trailer was mysterious and that it peaked their interest – so in this respect it is a success.
For the three texts I wanted them to seem like the film they are advertising is a sophisticated movie and not just a regular horror bloodbath - this due to my target audience being 18 to 25 and people who enjoy a more physiological experience. Members of my target audience believed that my texts were mature instead of juvenile like the majority of horror films nowadays.
As the filmmakers don’t create the magazines they have to negotiate with the magazine to show their film. Usually they would make a deal – they will allow the magazine to have access to the main star only if the agree to give their film the main article and allow a lot of exposure and coverage on the front of the magazine.
Instead of using a photo still from the film I took separate photos for the magazine – which is more related to the film, with the soft gentle opening – the actress looks thoughtful. This contrasts with the aggressive poster. My target audience felt this was a nice touch to have a comparison.

Audience Feedback and Evaluation Question 2
Trailer
Poster
Magazine
The two people in my feedback film are within my target audience and I also used a male and female to make sure I get both genders covered.
Evaluation Question 3
Over all my target audience liked the texts the poster and trailer more so than the magazine however.
For my trailer the mystery of the trailer appealed to my audience also the ‘spooky’ voice over was intriguing and they thought that it helped distinguish it from a music video – these points made them think it worked as a trailer – plus they believed that the length was good size and that the genre is clearly established.
I queried my audience about my actress and they agreed that she appealed to them and that she suited the role as a ‘damsel in distress’ and she conforms to the negative stereotype of women needing protection and are easily controlled and dominated by men. Her costume they also believed was a powerful image.
Like the powerful image of the wedding dress my target audience also thought that on my poster the powerful image of the hand was effective and appealed to them. And intrigued them into viewing the film plus the claustrophobia of the room which appeals to them as its pshycological horror instead of a blood bath – I wanted my audience to be more sophisticated in their cinematic tastes. The poster really appealed to them and peaked their interest to watch the film.
The convention of the magazine appealed to them as they know what they like. I showed both magazine covers – the colour image and the black and white image – they prefered the black and white image, so this became my final one. Also they believed the cover was a bit full on so i reduced the amount of items on it. After I had completed the creating the audience believed that my actress should be looking straight at the camera. It was also noted that the black and red writing was effective however the red was hard to see – so I darkened it up so that it would be more readable.

Final Magazine
This I have chosen as my final construction due to the fact that there is lack of colour – this shows lifelessness and emphasises her death. I kept things in columns like I saw within my research. I have used the title of ‘Empire’ however I’m not trying to copy the magazine – I have tried to do my own thing and not copy completely the style of magazine that they do. Of course there are similarities as my research included Empire magazine.
